Love Story Of Chor Meng And Dean

Trust and respect. One must be open and can never keep resentments to himself. A marriage is a commitment of many years, and every year will be a new learning experience.” – Chew Chor Meng, on the key to a successful marriage.
Q: How did you two meet each other?
Chor Meng: I met her at an event in 1995, where I was hosting a show and she was modelling. I decided to initiate a conversation with her and eventually managed to get her pager number.
Q: How did you two tie the knot?
Deon: He proposed to me four years into our courtship, and we got married in 2000. The proposal happened while I was busy replenishing stock in a warehouse for a shoe retail store. I turned to find Chor Meng kneeling down with a bouquet of flowers and a teddy bear.
Q: What do you love most about each other?
Chor Meng: I love that she is so caring. A couple should have mutual respect for each other, and she is highly supportive of me. If I’m the head of the family, she is my ‘neck’.
Deon: I fell in love with his character. He has so much filial piety and I really respect that. I also appreciate that he does not smoke or drink, and returns home punctually after work to spend quality time with his family.
Q: What is the most romantic moment you have recently shared with each other?
Chor Meng: On her last birthday, I brought her out for dinner at the Mövenpick Heritage Hotel Sentosa which also serves as a wedding venue in Singapore. We dined in a private room and I arranged for someone to help design a cake that looked like a handbag, which was really nice.
Deon: The cake really amazed me. I was also surprised at all his effort, since he’s never been much of the conventionally romantic type. Besides, my birthday is only three days after Valentine’s Day.
Q: How do you keep the romance alive?
Chor Meng: Deon and I always try to talk everything out with each other. We also spend some time with each other even after our children are asleep. Recently, we even had our wedding vows renewed, which was very meaningful to us.
Deon: To take some time out together, we enjoy red wine in our garden every fortnight and work closely together to take care of our children. Chor Meng isn’t very fond of going outdoors and I am more of a practical sort, so it’s more of these little things that count instead of big, showy gestures.
Q: What were some of the challenges that you faced in your marriage?
Chor Meng: I fell into depression when I knew that I developed Kennedy’s disease. However, I decided to stay positive as well as believe in counting your blessings and transforming obstacles into your favour. I thank my family and God in helping me to cope with the disease. I was encouraged to improve bonding time with my family.
Deon: There were many unanticipated challenges that we faced with the onset of his illness. It dampened my spirits at work. My colleagues were concerned, but I was just too moody to explain to them about it. However, it dawned upon me that I should be happy that Chor Meng is still able to walk.
Q: What is the biggest act of love that you do for each other on a daily basis?
Chor Meng: I always make a point to say ‘I love you’ and kiss her, because you really never know when it will be your last chance to do so. Sometimes, Deon writes endearing lines on Post-it notes to me.
Deon: I don’t consider ourselves as super lovey-dovey, but we do express affection through small actions such as holding each other’s hands to sleep.
