Love Story Of Zheng Geping And Hong Huifang

“Because of our differences, many of our friends believed that we wouldn’t work out. Someone even once told me, ‘Don’t even think about marrying her. Let’s see if it will even last three months!’ But look at us now. We tied the knot after two years of dating, and had our first child within the next two years or so.” – Zheng Geping.

Q: What’s your love story?

Geping: It never really occurred to me that we would end up together; she was the Ah Jie (big sister) of MediaCorp, and I was just a rookie actor. There was an occasion when our friend and fellow artiste, Chen Hui Hui, organised a chalet at East Coast Park after wrapping up a project. It was there that Hui Fang and I got to know each other better after staying up all night chatting over drinks, and a special feeling came over me. I was very impressed by her straight talk and wisdom.

Hui Fang: Although we were colleagues for some time before we fell in love, I didn’t like him much initially. In fact, I thought he was a bit of an ah beng (hooligan). After a night of interesting conversation with him at the chalet, I realised there was much more to him than meets the eye. I found out that he’s actually very sweet and has a kind heart – and this is even more so now.

Q:How did you tie the knot?

Geping: Our first and official wedding in 1992 was a small and intimate closed-door ROM ceremony, which only involved close friends and family. There were no smart phones and social media platforms at the time, so nobody else got wind of it. It was only a year and a half later that we decided to hold a church wedding, followed by a large wedding banquet.

Hui Fang: One thing that I remembered most about our church wedding was how my father surprisingly agreed to walk me down the aisle, despite the fact that he is not a Christian. This touching gesture made me tear a lot as Geping carried me out from the church.

Q: What do you do to keep the romance going?

Hui Fang: He never fails to give me flowers every Valentines day. He also still does things to surprise me and make me laugh. Sometimes, we enjoy a glass of red wine together after the kids go to bed.

Geping: We also enjoy golfing together a lot. Golfing, I would say, is our form of paktor (dating).

Q: Tell us about some of the challenges you’ve faced during your marriage.

Hui Fang: Over the last three years, I experienced mood swings due to menopause. I’m very grateful that Geping has been so patient with me; especially during the times I have been sensitive and unreasonable due to the hormonal changes I was going through. I really salute him for that. 

Geping: Through this, I’ve learned to be more understanding towards her and respond instead of react whenever she got temperamental or depressed. Every man has to face it in the later years.

Q: In your opinion, what are the ingredients to a lasting marriage?

Geping: I would not say that it’s love, because at every stage of a relationship, the feelings that you have for each other will change as well. Communication is very important, from the start to the present.

Hui Fang: It is impossible for couples not to argue. But every time they do, they should learn from it.

Q: A daily act of love that you do for your spouse?

Geping: Sometimes I forget, but I try to kiss her every night before we go to bed.

Hui Fang: He likes to eat bread. These days, I bake bread for him to have as breakfast every morning. He also helps out with the household chores, and sends the children to school for me so that I can get more sleep.

Geping: Thanks to her, I don’t buy bread from bakeries anymore!
